Why does one still get good returns when one does a lot of bad deeds at work?

A friend asked the following question -

Is Karma the only way to explain the situation whereby a generally-disliked person or one who does nasty things to others, can still get promoted at work? If the person is doing bad, then why does the person still enjoy good Karma in this life (the good Karma is a result of past life’s efforts probably). Will this good Karma end, or will it not? Don’t we always say the bad will get its just deserts, but in this case the just deserts just don’t seem to come.

@JongYin…My humble views…Learn from Lamrim that the certainty of karma will prevail ultimately. It is a matter of time…
