When our loved ones passed away, during their 49 days and also on their death anniversary we engage the monks to do the chanting & rituals for their deliverance.
We thought that is the normal way of deliverance till i chance upon Venerable Sheng Yan’s explanation.

So much learning I got from the video!
The constant salient point comes through for me - that we should take on our own responsibility to deliver ourselves and others from suffering.
And in the same manner, I see Buddhism as not just a set of rituals but a concrete practice that can help us overcome our afflictions and bring us to happiness.
