养宠物可以吗?

请问佛教徒能养狗吗?听说不是很鼓励,如在还没学佛前已养狗,怎么办呢?

Master Sheng Yen addressed a similar question in one of his discourse - Are Buddhists allowed to keep pets?

It is permissible for Buddhists to keep pets, but not recommended. If you do keep pets, be sure to love and take care of them properly, as they do feel pain like us and no sentient being wants pain. Having compassion toward animals doesn’t mean we have to take home all stray animals we see just because we pity them, for there are simply so many stray animals. Instead we can recite Amitabha Buddha’s name and transfer the merit to them, praying for them to gain a better, higher rebirth.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice.
